Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced in February, 2014 the launch of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Drones for Good award. It’s an exciting competition that will see the most innovative drone technology inventor walk away with a US$1 million prize. Stating their desire to reach people faster, save time, shorten distances, and increase effectiveness with UAVs, the committee pointed out numerous reasons  why investment in unmanned vehicle developments is important:

  • $8-10 billion USD will be the drone industry’s impact by 2025
  • 100,000+ jobs will be created directly by the growth of drone technologies
  • Drones cost 10x less to operate than helicopters, making them very affordable for impoverished regions

This video gives a great overview of the problems specific to delivery in Kenya and the potential for UAV deliveries to ease a whole range of societal problems. This is just one example of the types of projects that may qualify for the Drones for Good Award.
