Sony Enters 2015 Drone Market but Will Samsung Follow?

With involvement of big companies such as Sony, the 2015 drone market seems to be in better shape than ever and shows great promise for the future. The question is, if Sony is all set to make its mark in the market, will Samsung soon follow in Sony’s footsteps?

  • Sony’s Advancement in 2015 Drone Market: Sony has recently announced its entry into the drone market and it is currently testing a drone called Aerosense which will be directed towards enterprise and business users. The drone will provide comprehensive solutions for measuring, surveying, inspecting, and observing. Aerosense will provide users with additional value by incorporating Sony’s cloud solutions. The company’s drone is being developed through a joint venture between Sony and ZMP which is a Japan-based automation specialist entity.
  • Will Samsung Follow Sony?: Samsung is the ultimate fast follower as suggested by its corporate strategy. The company learns from its competitors and develops a product that leaves them behind. The Apple-Samsung competition in the smartphone market sets a strong precedent regarding Samsung’s market behavior. If Sony succeeds in the drone market, Samsung is highly likely to follow down the same path.
  • Job Creation by Entry in the Drone Market: Large scale investment by big companies such as Sony and Samsung will create thousands of jobs. Engineers and technicians from different fields in robotics will be required to fuel the research and development activities. In fact, we estimate that more than 100,000 jobs will be created in the UAV job market which will include software developers, hardware manufacturers, and technicians.

Having big companies such as Sony and Samsung in the 2015 drone market will completely alter the future of the industry by adding thousands of jobs and pushing the technological boundaries – rapidly. By 2021, the commercial drone industry is expected to be worth more than $4.8 billion and if the injection of capital continues by companies like Sony and Samsung, the growth can accelerate at a much faster pace than anticipated.

What factors do you think can have a significant impact on the structure of the drone market?
