BioCarbon Engineering has a vision to use aerial drones to plant one billion trees every year. While this cannot compete with the 26 billion trees that are cut down globally for lumber, agriculture, urbanization, and mining, the UK company feels that their solution could seriously help the human race claw its way back from the devastation of current deforestation levels. At only 15% of the cost of traditional reforestation methods, this is a really interesting way to see UAVs in action.

The project involves first using aerial drones to create 3D terrain maps that help them choose suitable replantation locations. The fully-loaded drones – equipped with seed pods filled with nutrient-rich hydrogel – then disperse the baby trees strategically. UAVs are also used to keep an eye on the area as the seeds take root.

What a great drone application! Find out more at BioCarbon Engineering.
